Who were the Levites?
Well, the short answer is: The Levites were people from the tribe of Levi (one of the twelve tribes of Israel), whose duties were to oversee the ins and outs of the Tabernacle of Adonai.
But really, as with everything in Scripture, even a concept as simple as Tribal duties can be steeped with depths upon depths of spiritual revelations and blessings in Messiah Yeshua.
There is more to the role of the Levite than meets the eye…
Numbers 1:50 “You are to appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, over all its implements and all pertaining to it. They are to carry the Tabernacle and all its utensils, serve it and camp around it.”
The Levites were specifically chosen and charged by Adonai to serve in the ministry of the Tabernacle. And in case you didn’t know, not every Levite was a priest, however every priest in Israel was a Levite, a descendant of the Tribe Levi.
So, what exactly are the revelations and blessings hidden in the role of the Levite?
What does it all mean for us as believers in Messiah Yeshua? 1 Peter 2:9 gives us an idea-
“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
When Messiah appeared as the spiritual high priest of the good things already in motion (Hebrews 9:11), he inaugurated the way for US as believers to become spiritual priests in the service of the Tabernacle of Adonai.
And that’s not all! If, through Messiah, we are a chosen nation of priests for Adonai, what does our service of his Tabernacle look like;
especially considering “the Tabernacle of Adonai” is no longer a mere building built by human capabilities.
Listen to this New Testament verse describing the progressive revelation of the “Tabernacle of Adonai.”
1 Corinthians 3:16-17
“Don’t you know that you people are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? So if anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you yourselves are that temple.”
So…
Being a believer means you are a spiritual Levite and priest.
Being a Levite and priest means you serve the Tabernacle of Adonai.
And…
The Tabernacle of Adonai is no longer found in one particular place, but rather the Tabernacle of Adonai is each and every person who believes on the name Yeshua.
What an immense privilege we have had bestowed upon us in Messiah!!
Now, verses like those in Numbers chapter 1 take on a whole new meaning… think about it…
“The Levites carried the Tabernacle...”
CARRY EACH OTHERS BURDENS “The Levites served the Tabernacle…”
SERVE AND MINISTER TO ONE ANOTHER
“The Levites camped around the Tabernacle…”
PROTECT AND PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER
Let this truly be our portion in this world, Adonai, as your priests… in your service. Amen
